Learn about different optic transmitters and receivers?

I need to learn about how the market for optic transmitters and receivers looks on a pretty deep level. I'd need to learn answers to questions such as:
- what different categories of transmitters and receivers are there?
- what separated the categories?
- which companies by what products for what reasons?
I bet there are plenty of experts on this topic here on the forum. If you could give me pointers where I can learn about this I would be very grateful.
Maybe there are some whitepapers somewhere on the net, or there is some magazine I should read, or anything.
