I am looking for a solution using fiber optic cable (as a receiver) and IR transmiter (TV remote controller for instance) . It works well at a short distance (under 18 inches of air gap) but over that distance it is erratic or not working at all. Does an amplifier or a kind of captor could fix that problem ?

You may use an amplifier ( electronic) or a EDF cut to amplify.
Best, you use a pigtail lens attachment at the fiber tip.
