The variations are due to varying launch conditions. Especially when the connector/boot are moved ever so slightly. The best is to make sure there are as little bends in the cable. This is from boot-boot.

Hello guys, I need immediate help.

I'm testing a 5 meters multimode patchcord. whenever the cord is displaced or moved (even just a few centimeters from its original position), the power meter reading varies. Why was that?

Mandrel wrapping is more beneficial for multi mode since there are many more higher order modes that you want to strip out. In the field just wrap the test lead arround one of your fingers about 10 times. In the office use something more permanent.

I think this is a good tip for Field based testing & for Multimode/Access Grade cables.

For Telecom Grade patch cable manufacture at a dedicated facility it might be better to stick with 100% termination testing. Else I believe it makes it impossible to determine a terminations individual Insertion Loss (IL) and Return Loss (RL).

As for the mandral Wrap, is this good practice for Multimode and Singlemode would you say... Or just Multimode?

Save time when testing patchcords by carrying out a full cord test. Utilize two reference cords with your cord under test in the center. This saves time as you don't have to take two readings or flip the cord around.

If you are using only one reference cord to carry our your loss reading be sure to disconnect the cord from the power meter end NOT the light source when hooking up your cord under test with the mating sleeve. This saves time as each time the cord is disconnected from the Light Source your reference reading will change.

To obtain a more precise reading, utilize a mandrel and wrap your reference cord around it, this strips the light from the clad when taking your loss reading.
